ADD CUSTOM RINGTONES TO
YOUR
IPHONE WITH ITUNES
Apple's iPhone ships with 25 built-in ringtones and the ability to assign a personalized ringtone to each of your contacts.
However, most iPhone owners quickly tire of the Marimba, and yearn for a little more ringtone spice. After all, what is the iPhone, if not a
customizable voyage into sight and sound?
Armed with iTunes version 7.4.1 or higher, you can quickly and painlessly add custom ringtones to your iPhone. iTunes,
available on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms, is Apple's free audio player, CD burner and gateway to the online iTunes Store.

How To Create a Unique iPhone Ringtone
Currently, a half-million of the iTunes Store's 6 million songs are ringtone-ready. iTunes ringtones will cost
you $1.98. You create a ringtone by first purchasing a song for 99 cents, then converting a portion of the song into your own unique ringtone for
an additional 99 cents.
The ringtone editor only works on tracks stored in your library, so you must first buy the ringtone-ready song.
You can't buy only the ringtone, nor will the iTunes Ringtone Editor let you buy just any 99-cent song and convert it to a ringtone -- not
without a bit of hacking, anyway.
To create ringtones from a song in your existing iTunes song library, you'll first need to display the Ringtone
column in iTunes. iTunes will offer to scan your library and mark eligible ringtone tracks with a small gray bell icon. Simply click the bell
icon, or choose Create Ringtone from the Store menu, and the ringtone editor slides in.
The process of converting songs purchased from the iTunes Store into iPhone ringtones is simple and smooth. The
iTunes ringtone editor displays a waveform of the song you wish to convert to a ringtone. You can drag-and-select anywhere from 3 to 30 seconds
of music and apply fade-ins, fade-outs, playback delay and loops to your ringtone selection. You can even include gaps of silence before and
after your loops. And a Preview button lets you listen to your ringtone throughout the editing process.
Once you're satisfied with your new ringtone, you'll simply click the Buy button in the Ringtone Editor pane. A
word of caution: Ringtones, once created, cannot be edited or altered. Once you purchase a ringtone, it becomes a separate audio file.

Syncing Your Custom iPhone Ringtone
Installing your new ringtone on your iPhone is a breeze. You'll find a Ringtones tab in iTunes' iPhone's
settings. To transfer your ringtone to your iPhone, simply select your new ringtone and click Apply. Assign your new ringtone to any of your
contacts by editing their contact information and choosing Assign Ringtone.
Compare the Cost of iTunes Ringtones to T-Mobile, Sprint & Verizon Ringtones
At $1.98, Apple's ringtones are less expensive than any American telecom carrier, offer more customizability,
and give you the ringtone, as well as the complete song. However, iPhone owners are currently limited to Apple's half-million ringtone-ready
songs. More ringtone-ready songs will be added as Apple obtains permission from the record labels, one song at a time.
The major telecom carriers offer songs that Apple doesn't. However, Verizon's pop song ringtones cost $3,
T-Mobile's and Sprint's cost $2.50. These three telecom carriers don't allow you to customize the ringtones, plus, their ringtones have
expiration dates; for example, Sprint's ringtones expire after 90 days, Verizon's after a year. iTunes ringtones have no expiration date. And the
song, of course, is yours to keep forever.
If you're looking for greater ringtone versatility, you may want to investigate third-party solutions which let
you create ringtones from any compatible sound file, with no per-song charge. Of course, adventurous hacks always carry some element of risk, so
be sure to do your homework before adding ringtones to your iPhone with any method not sanctioned by Apple.
